Extending the Ha Giang Loop to Cao Bang and Ban Gioc Waterfall

Why do riders extend the loop to Cao Bang?

Because by the time you reach Meo Vac at the eastern end of the standard loop, Cao Bang province is already close, and Ban Gioc Waterfall is the draw. Continuing east rather than turning back toward Ha Giang city trades familiar karst cliffs for river valleys and a greener landscape.

There is a second, less romantic reason: the standard loop returns you along roads you have partly already seen. Riders who dislike retracing ground find the extension more appealing than the return leg, independent of the waterfall itself.

The counter-argument is worth stating plainly. The core loop through Dong Van, Meo Vac and Ma Pi Leng Pass is a complete trip that needs nothing added to it, and the extension is a real commitment of days rather than a bonus. Most riders who skip it do not feel short-changed.

How much extra time does it add?

Two to three extra days on top of the two to four a standard Ha Giang Loop already takes, which makes a combined trip roughly five to seven days. Treat it as a second trip bolted on, not a detour.

The exact figure moves with pace and how many stops you make, but the honest framing matters because people routinely underestimate this one. You are not adding an afternoon at a waterfall. You are adding riding days in a different province, with a return leg to plan on top.

Riders on tighter schedules regularly skip the extension and treat Dong Van, Meo Vac and Ma Pi Leng Pass as the whole trip, which it comfortably is. What's different about the Cao Bang leg?

Less vertical, less technical, and noticeably emptier of tourist infrastructure. The road out toward Cao Bang trades Ha Giang's cliff-edge drama for river valleys and longer, flatter riding stretches.

That change is the appeal for some riders and the disappointment for others. After several days of switchbacks at 1,500 meters, a greener and gentler landscape reads as a genuine change of pace. If what you came to Vietnam for was specifically the Dong Van Karst Plateau, the UNESCO Global Geopark the core loop crosses, the extension can feel like a long ride to a different kind of place.

Ban Gioc Waterfall itself is a wide, multi-tiered falls straddling the China-Vietnam border, known for water volume rather than the narrow cliffside intensity of Ma Pi Leng Pass. Practical differences worth planning around: fewer fuel stops, fewer places to eat, thinner accommodation options, and less chance of passing another traveler who can help if something breaks.

What should you sort out before committing to it?

Three things: whether your visa covers the longer trip, whether the season suits a route with less support, and whether your insurance still applies.

The visa point catches people out most often. Adding two or three days to a trip already running five or six can push a tight itinerary against the limit of a Vietnam e-visa, and the extension is a bad place to discover you are short on time. Check the validity window against your full itinerary before you commit rather than at Meo Vac.

Season matters more here than on the core loop, because the thinner infrastructure gives you less margin. June through August rain and landslide risk is a more serious problem on a route where a blocked road may not be cleared quickly and there may be no easy alternative.
